Aluminerie Alouette releases its latest sustainable development results

SEPT-ÎLES, October 29, 2018 – During a public presentation, the largest private employer in Sept-Îles unveiled its 2017 Sustainable Development Report and the results of a perception survey conducted in spring 2018. The numbers speak for themselves: Alouette respects current environmental standards by a wide margin and is very well perceived in the Sept-Rivières regional county municipality.

For the first time, Alouette innovated by inviting the public to a presentation, in addition to publishing the report and its previous editions on its website, as it does every year. The 2017 Report outlines the smelter’s activities by presenting the main highlights and various indicators, based on its five-point strategy. The year 2017 was a pivotal year on several fronts, as it marked Alouette’s 25th year of operation. Several activities involving employees, partners and the community were a great success. Alouette continues to make improvements to health and safety, underlined by a slight decrease in the rate of recordable injuries. The smelter also continues to minimize its impact on the environment by relying on best practices. In fact, the availability and performance of scrubbers surpass 99% on an annual basis. Production amounted to 595,685 tonnes of aluminium. And, dozens of millions of dollars were also invested to maintain and modernize assets.

“On the whole, we’re very proud of our results. Alouette employees excel every year, doing so with a great deal of respect for our host community,” says Dominique Denicourt, Vice-President of Human Resources and Corporate Affairs. “The perception survey gauged public opinion and confirms that our company is greatly appreciated, in every respect,” he adds.

The perception survey, conducted by an external firm, collected the opinions of 501 respondents from Port-Cartier and Sept-Îles, who do not work for Alouette. The general opinion of the company was positive among 97% of respondents. Nevertheless, various avenues for improvement have been identified and put forward, including the idea of going back to a presentation of the results.
